American country/southern rock band Alabama is one of the best-selling bands of all time. Formed 40 years ago by Randy Owen, his cousin Teddy Gentry and another cousin, Jeff Cook, the band blended country and southern rock with gospel and pop and began performing in local bars. Their appearance was unorthodox for country musicians at the time--"We were renegades in sneakers and T-shirts," says Teddy. "We had long hair and played loud.” They began writing original tunes, charted two successful singles, and reached a deal with RCA Records, launching them on their collective career. They toured extensively and eventually reached over 30 number one country records on the charts, selling over 75 million records.
